CHAPTER 18

I always know when my mother is mad at me and now she is furious. I don't really know what could have happened, but I know she is angry.

My father is also weird with me, but at least he talks to me.

My day started out shitty, because last night I had what I could call the most awkward date of my life.

Liam is handsome, just like Evan said, but he is nowhere near my kid. Also, his green eyes look like a bad imitation of Evan's. And I spent the evening counting the differences between them. Then I was thinking about my kid all the time, and when Liam tried to kiss me, Evan came to mind and I shied away.

Liam got annoyed telling me that I was distant and that if I didn't want to go out with him it was okay, to just tell him. And I realized that I had hurt Evan in an attempt to make him jealous. I ran into Liam the other night and nothing happened. Then yesterday he called me and I brought up that meeting to see Evan's reaction and made it look like something arranged on purpose. Only looking back on it now, he might have thought I wasn't serious about him and was playing games to provoke him while I was dating Liam.

-Are you already tired of having me around?- I ask, sitting down at the kitchen table in front of my mother. My father went out with Evan's dad. They went for a hike.

-Of course not. I see so little of you- she says without taking her eyes off the recipe book Evan gave her three years ago for Christmas.

-Then why do you look angry with me?- I ask and she looks at me with a smile.

-I am not angry with you. I'm sorry for not talking to you today- she says taking my hands.

-Are you sure?- I ask and she nods, smiling. I love my mother and seeing her ignore me like that was strange.

-Where were you last night? When we came back you weren't there- she says taking the cookbook back in her hand.

-I went out with Liam. Do you remember him?-

She takes her eyes off the book and makes the face she makes when she thinks and then her eyes light up when she remembers.

-Of course! He was always here at home- she says with a strange smile. -Was it a date?-

-I don't know, and if it was, I think I blew it- I say truthfully. My mother and I don't have many secrets.

-How come?-

-I was distant. Mom I think I hurt Evan without realizing it-

-By hitting on him all day and then going out with someone else in the evening?- She asks and I have a feeling there is more behind those words said so contemptuously. She knew that I had gone out with someone yesterday. That they saw Evan and he told them? That would explain their behavior this morning.

-He rejected me- I immediately defend myself.
